Let’s be very clear here: it’s not about the food, it’s not about the drinks, it’s not about the service. No. It’s all about the vibe.
Wolves is indeed one of those cool places where you just want to hang out with your friends and see the afternoon pass by in a never-ending chitchat. Because Wolves is to Jozi what Central Perk is to New York, a kind of fantasized place, halfway between a cosy home and a vintage shop, where it feels good to spend time in the sweet company of your dear ones.
Labelling Wolves a restaurant would be an eccentricity that I surely don’t want to be associated with. The place has no kitchen per se, and relies on its friendly neighbour, the Good Luck Club, an excellent Asian laid-back restaurant (who, I presume, shares the same owner) to offer a range of sandwiches and humble dishes to the crowd gathering there for lunch or dinner. A selection of tempting cakes is on display at the bar, and you’ll have to choose from a wide array of beers and other potions to pair with your meal. (not always cold enough to my taste, but you might blame it on vintage fridge standing in a corner of the room, or to some recent load shedding, who knows…)
No, definitely, Wolves is not a typical restaurant. It is also an art gallery, always exhibiting interesting (and affordable!) pieces of local art, a design/vintage shop where you can find everything from fine pieces of jewelry to cool t-shirts, and a concert room, hosting every Thursday during their Howl sessions shows of South African artists.
So you might not have in Wolves the most refined food ever, but you’ll sure have the greatest time, and at the end of the day, that is what truly matters.
